Don't get hot under the collar, Daddy-O.Collapse )

SO SEZ SIDNEY FINKELSTEIN.

Other gems: "The appreciation for Swan Lake was unfortunately delayed for almost two decades. Had it been written for St. Petersburg, it would have had the services of the ballet-master Petipa. But the Moscow production was handled by a bundling [sic] conductor, Ryabov, and an even more bungling choreographer, Reisinger. The result, unveiled in 1877, was an atrocity. Strange as it seems when we think of the almost transparent beauty of the score, these muddle-heads found the music to be much too complicated for them.

In closing, the Utah Symphony Orchestra! They'll be here all week. Tip your waiter.

also he calls rue "lady of the truthful eyes," awesome
Once upon a time, there lived a fair young man. People loved the beautiful young man, but the young man never tried to love anyone. That was because he loved only himself. Because he sought only to be loved when the young man (who) neglected to love found someone he truly loved, he discovered that he could not even convey his feelings to her.

needs moar joanna newsom?
So, my wake-up music is currently her album Ys, which is five very long songs. When I wake up to sounds I incorporate them to whatever dream-matter I have floating in my head and that's how I recognized "Monkey & Bear," a song about circus animals escaping slavery only to form an abusive relationship which must also be escaped, as about Rue.

And today it was how I recognized "Sawdust & Diamonds," a song about a dove marionette and deeesire, as about the OTP.

Download and lyricsCollapse )

I would bold parts but it's funner to compare notes later! BTW, I can't think that I will apply the other three Ys songs to Tutu, but one, "Cosmia," totally could be applied although I think it requires a willful misinterpretation of the song, and would work as a vid (I think the other two songs are just too complicated and long for it) (there's a nice Pan's Labyrinth vid to "Cosmia" by dualbunny. It concludes:

and I miss your precious heart;
and miss, and miss, and miss,
& miss, & miss, & miss, & miss, & miss your heart
but release your precious heart
to its feast, for precious hearts

So!

everyone = odette
I wrote this in my journal on Monday:

I am vaguely pondering Rue's story. It's true that as Kraehe she was more powerful. But all she ever wanted was Mytho's love. And controlling him as Kraehe gave her more access to him, but his already empty "love" was then a matter of compulsion and even less meaningful. What she really wanted was for him to truly love the real her, Rue. So her rejection of the Kraehe persona was actually an act of agency, and her confession of love as her true self was heroic because this is Tutuland where emotional truth is the greatest virtue. And if Mytho has to save her after, it's okay because she already saved him.

Even though I loved her as Kraehe, that identity always made her miserable. She becomes Odette at the end after having been Odile to Ahiru's Odette. Ahiru was indeed a reverse Odette, transformed from bird to human — but Rue was also Odette, imprisoned by a sorceror in the fate of a bird. And so it seems fair that she gets Odette's happiest ending. And so does Mytho: Rothbart's spell breaks when somone swears his love for Odette. That's what Rue did for him.

And the monster raven is a stand-in for Drosselmeyer! This became extra obvious to me as I woke up to "Monkey & Bear" and it was all about Rue stepping clear of Raven, out from allegiance to a life of service to Raven and to Drosselmeyer by proxy.

References:

- At the end of Tutu, Rue and Mytho(s) ride off in a golden boat. It's not in any of my ballet storybooks, but this was referenced in the Swan Lake story of the lurid rpf book I checked out. Apparently in the ballet when Odette and Siegfried drown themselves, they kinda don't die but instead the overwhelming power of their love breaks Rothbart's spell and they ride off in a golden boat to the kingdom of love (heaven?). So the Rue/Mythos ending is an amalgam of the SL Happy Ending of "good guys win!" and the SL Semi-Happy Ending of "kingdom of love" and totally ignores the OTHER SL ending of "rocks fall, everyone dies, except maybe Siegfried who is left alone with Benno?" (Note: the golden boat may also refer to Lohengrin sdjkhjkdfs)

yoink, it's a raven
Kraehe, or Krähe (the umlaut-a is the equivalent of ae), means crow or "squawk" in German.

Fun with wikipedia:

- Ravens are part of the crow (corvid) family.
- Crows and especially ravens are considered the smartest of all birds.
- "Many crow species are all black. Most of their natural enemies, the raptors or "falconiformes", soar high above the trees, and hunt primarily on bright, sunny days when contrast between light and shadow is greatest. Crows take advantage of this by maneuvering themselves through the dappled shades of the trees, where their black color renders them effectively invisible to their enemies above, in order to set up complex ambush attacks. Fledglings are much duller than adults in appearances of great strategic importance to their societies. It is perhaps here where we find the greatest difference between ravens and crows; ravens tend to soar high in the air as raptors do, and like raptors, are usually the target of ambushes by crows. Crows do not appear to perceive ravens as their own kind, but instead treat them as raptors."
- Crows aren't kosher!
- Raven is a trickster/creator figure in Native American mythology, and are also Odin's minions named Thought and Memory in Norse mythology.
- "Avalokiteśvara/Chenrezig, who is reincarnated on Earth as the Dalai Lama, is often closely associated with the crow because it is said that when the first Dalai Lama was born, robbers attacked the family home. The parents fled and were unable to get to the infant Lama in time. When they returned the next morning expecting the worst, they found their home untouched, and a pair of crows were caring for the Dalai Lama." <-- opposite of the monster raven/Rue relationship? Buddhism has other positive associations with ravens as well.
- very interestingly, German Wikipedia does not distinguish between the two birds.

oh hay
Interesting quotes culled from tendom:

- Fakir asks for Lohengrin's sword. In Arthurian legend, Lohengrin is the son of Percival, who rides in a boat drawn by swans. According to Wiki, the Knight of the Swan is an even older legend than this that just got connected to Arthurian tales (as lo, Arthurian tales are the black hole of European legends). It was adopted in an opera by Wagner creatively titled Lohengrin, which is famous for its "Bridal Chorus."

- note that Charon says that the story of the Prince and the Knight is a legend that's been passed down for ages. It's yet another clue that the story is much, much, MUCH older than it seems.

- I'm also amused that Edel no longer needs to give advice, just a tiny bit of information, and Ahiru's mind fills in the rest of the gaps.

- [at the beginning of Banquet] - While talking to Fakir, the form is Tutu, but the voice is Ahiru. This the first time, I think, we've had that much crossover between the two.

- The point-counterpoint between Kraehe and Fakir is so very cool and fascinating! Because for a long time, technically, they stood on the same side. But Fakir eventually accepted that Mytho wanted to change, even though his Fate--in some ways--is worse than Kraehe's. That, I think, sticks in her craw (ha!) as much as Mytho's apparent feeling for Tutu.

Kraehe is trying very hard here to be a villain. She taunts Tutu and Fakir about their ultimate Fate and how they've brought it on themselves; she attempts to blackmail them with her control over Mytho but can't bear to watch him destroy the love she so craves; she pushes Tutu to accept her Fate but can't stand it when Tutu happily makes the attempt. There's little cracks all throughout her portrayal, and it's fun to try and spot them.

- [Fakir] also leaves the rest to Tutu instead of trying to continue to defend him. She, in turn, takes up his mission--instead of saying she'll save Mytho, she says she's going to protect him.

- The pas de deux Tutu dances by herself, and the one she and the Prince dance at the end here, is the White Swan pas de deux from Act 2 of Swan Lake.

HOBBES SAYS: this one is rad, this one is pretty good but lacks a certain spark, and this one I really like the dancers but it's not the part included in the show.

- Three times Fakir falls into the water. Every time is visibly painful and life-threatening, unlike times when Ahiru is involved with water, which are usually pleasant and healing.

- HMM, so Kraehe is not only aware of Drosselmeyer's manipulations, but manipulates him right back. He also calls her a "slave," right after that intro about the princess and the slave. Again making it ambiguous who is the real slave. MAYBE IT'S DROSSELMEYER.

So, thoughts on how we should do this:

- tag the shit out of everything
- post logs of importance
- gather all prologue transcripts & notes together in one post (per season?)
- dump whatever interesting info & good thoughts
- reposting in more coherent fashion is fine

We will master you yet, Princess Tutu. She will be mine. Oh yes. She will be mine.
